Lori Drew wasn’t exactly acquitted. The jury did find her guilty of a misdemeanor violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, although the judge overturned it on technicalities.

In addition:

(1) The state of Missouri updated their harrassment legislation to cover cyberbullying.
(2) The Drews got a taste of what cyberbullying is like when their home and work addresses, phone and cell numbers, and aerial photos of their home were posted on the Internet
(3) Their home was vandalized
(4) They had to close their business due to loss of clients (amazing how people will refuse to do business with someone who drives a young girl to suicide)
(5) They were subjected to death threats
(6) They had to enter their daughter into a different school
(7) They eventually had to move from their neighborhood.
(8)And, of course, there were all of those lovely attorney fees the Drews had to deal with.

So..yeah, the law vindicated Lori Drew. And that’s fine, because had Drew been convicted under the current laws, it would have set a precedent that effectively criminalized the Terms of Service statements for millions of websites, and hundreds of millions of Americans would suddenly be in violation of the law for merely having a Facebook account.

Instead, Lori Drew has to live the rest of her life with the social and financial consequences of what she did. She’s likely bankrupt, and she’ll spend the rest of her life living with the stigma of being a woman who helped kill a mentally ill child. No telling what the stress of all of this has done to her family–if she and her husband aren’t divorced in the next five years, I’ll be mighty surprised.

I think it’s great she didn’t go to jail. This way, she won’t escape the public condemnation, humiliation, and shunning.
